It runs from the junction with CR 80 in Quogue to the junction with New York State Route 24 (NY 24), CR 63 and CR 94 just outside of Riverhead . Much of the CR 104 runs through the David Allen Sarnoff Pine Barrens Preserve, a New York State Conservation Area that once belonged to the Radio Corporation of America .

From 1930 to 1972 the street was classified as New York State Route 113 .

Route description

CR 104 begins at the intersection with CR 80 ( Montauk Highway ) in the Town of Quogue . The route runs as Quogue-Riverhead Road, a two-lane road through residential areas in Quogue. After the junction with Scrub Oak Road, CR 104 passes under the Montauk Branch of Long Island Rail Road and passes a large industrial area north of the tracks. After the junction with Old Country Road , CR 104 turns north and is again lined with residential buildings. The route then reaches East Quogue , which consists of a few farms and the intersection with Lewis Road , where CR 104 again takes a north-westerly direction. Finally, CR 104 leads north to junctions 64N and 64S of the Sunrise Highway ( NY 27 ). CR 104 has four lanes for a short section in this area.

After NY 27, the CR 104 leads into dense forests and crosses the end point of CR 31 (Old Riverhead Road). Further north, CR 104 reaches a spacious intersection with the southern endpoint of CR 105 (Cross River Drive), where CR 104 changes its name to Riverleigh Avenue, reaches a roundabout in the Town of Southampton, just south of the village of Riverhead . CR 104 reaches its northern endpoint at the roundabout with CR 63 (Lake Avenue), CR 94 and NY 24 (Flanders Road / Nugent Drive).

history

When the State Routes were renumbered in New York in 1930 , the designation NY 113 was assigned to a previously unnumbered north-south connection between the Montauk Highway (then NY 27 ) in the town of Quogue and NY 25 in Riverhead. This also included Peconic Avenue in Riverhead, which was also part of what was then NY 24. This simultaneity was dissolved in 1970 when the end point of NY 113 was relocated to the intersection with NY 24. What was then NY 113 was repealed on March 29, 1972 when ownership of the road was transferred from the state to Suffolk County. NY 113 was subsequently rededicated to CR 104.
