Courier 1B was an American communications satellite .
It was the first active (with relay station ) communication satellite ever. It was operated by the US Air Force and launched from Cape Canaveral AFS Launch Complex 17 on October 4, 1960 . The 230 kg satellite was able to record messages from the ground station using the store-and-dump method and transmit them later. After 17 days, the satellite no longer responded to commands. It is assumed that the receiver no longer synchronized correctly.
