The Couvenwand Fountain

The Couvenwandbrunnen is located in the Aachen district of Burtscheid , North Rhine-Westphalia on Abteiplatz.

The wall fountain was designed by Jakob Couven , an Aachen baroque master builder, as part of a later extension of the inner courtyard of the Wespienhaus and not, as originally assumed, in 1737 by his father Johann Joseph Couven . It says: “At an unknown point in time, Jakob Couven was commissioned to install a fountain on the courtyard facade of the factory wing, which was installed after the war behind the church of St. Johann in Burtscheid. Here a badge wrongly shows him as a work by Couvens the Elder. Ä. out."

At the beginning of the 20th century, the Wespienhaus was sold due to financial problems of the owner and the interior furnishings were auctioned, whereby the fountain could be saved for the city. Speaking at the first Couven Museum Aachen in the House Fey on Seilgraben, the fountain in 1928 was in the courtyard of this house translocated . After the Fey house was almost completely destroyed by the bombing of July 14, 1943, the well was rescued and temporarily stored. Finally, in 1993 it was installed in its current location below the St. Johann church on Abteiplatz in Burtscheid.
