history
The Coventya Group goes back to the Société Continentale Parker company, which was founded in 1927 by the aviation pioneers Robert Deté, Enea Bossi, Louis Paulhan and Pierre Prier. The decisive factor was a license from Parker, Chicago, with which the entry into phosphating was successful. By concluding a distribution agreement with the US company Udylite, the spectrum was expanded to include electroplating technology.
In 1965, Metallgesellschaft in Frankfurt / Main took over the majority of Société Continentale Parker and managed it as a stake in its specialty chemicals subsidiary Chemetall. While the neighboring regions such as Benelux and Spain were initially in the foreground, from 1988 a forced policy of external growth in European electroplating markets followed:
- Barattini, Italy (1989)
- Polar, Italy (1993)
- TECS, France (1994)
- Pelidag, France (1995)
- Weiland, Germany (1996)
The resulting variety of names was eliminated in 1998 by renaming it Chemetall Plating Technologies.
The listed metal company got into considerable economic difficulties in 1993 due to bad speculation in the oil business, from which it never fully recovered. Indirectly, this led Chemetall to part ways with the electroplating business in 2000 and the latter was spun off under the name Coventya and sold to a financial investor.
The internationalization of the company was continued in the following years through further acquisitions or start-ups:
- Folke-Stigen, Sweden (2001)
- McGean Rohco Mexico (2002)
- CGT / Auromet, Italy (2002)
- CGL Quimica, Brazil (2003)
- Sirius Technologies, USA (2004)
- Coventya (Suzhou) Chemicals, China, 2006
- Taskem, USA (2007)
- Palojoki, Finland (2008)
- Electroplating activities of Chemetall-Rai, India (2011)
- Molecular Technologies, UK (2012)
This establishment of a worldwide service infrastructure became necessary due to the expectations of the automotive industry, which in turn is globalizing and expects its strategic suppliers to take appropriate steps.
Ownership
After the takeover of Société Continentale Parker by the Frankfurt-based Metallgesellschaft in 1965, the business was located in Chemetall GmbH, which was spun off in 1982. The latter was focused on the fine and specialty chemicals business. After the takeover of Dynamit Nobel AG in 1992, the Metallgesellschaft bundled all chemical activities in its new subsidiary. In 2000, Chemetall parted with the electroplating business in the form of a management buy-out , which was financed by division management and Quadriga Capital in Frankfurt. As a result, a significant proportion of the employees became shareholders of Coventya. After the investor left in 2006, the investment fund iXEN, which belongs to the French bank Natixis, took over the majority of the shares, which it sold to Barclays Private Equity France (now Equistone Partners Europe ) in 2011 . The business is managed by the Holding Compagnie Internationale de Galvanoplastie (CIGAL) with its headquarters in Clichy near Paris.
