Cowdenknowes House

Cowdenknowes House is a mansion near the Scottish village of Earlston in the Council Area Scottish Borders . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

In 1493 a fortress called Coudenknollis is recorded at the site. This was probably destroyed in the early 16th century. Presumably only the foundation of the tower on the southwest side of Cowdenknowes House remains of this building. A plaque with the year of construction 1554 is embedded in this. Based on architectural details, however, it seems obvious that at this point in time it could not have assumed the dimensions it is today. In 1574 the tower was expanded into a mansion. Cowdenknowes House was redesigned several times over the centuries.

description

The mansion is isolated on the left bank of Leader Water about a kilometer south of Earlston. The differentiable parts of the building include the defense tower from the 1550s and the later mansion. A newer wing connects both parts. The 1.07 m thick masonry of the four-story, elongated tower is made of quarry stone . At least the upper part of the building with its cantilevered battlement reinforcement with four-passages as loopholes does not correspond to the early year of construction. The cellar vault is partially below the floor level. The basement of the mansion consists of five stone vaults.
