Coyanosa

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Coyanosa is a census-designated place (CDP) in Pecos County in the US state of Texas .

geography

Coyanosa is located in west central Texas, 42 kilometers northwest of Fort Stockton and 54 kilometers southeast of Pecos, Texas at the intersection of Farm Roads 1776 and 1450.

history

Originally, the place was a local supply center for the surrounding ranches and had its own post office at times, from 1908 to 1918. In the 1950s, cotton began to be grown on artificially irrigated fields in the area. This led to a rapid increase in population, between 1958, about 200 inhabitants, and 1961 the number of inhabitants tripled. Because of the rise in oil prices in the mid-1970s, growing cotton on artificially irrigated fields was no longer profitable, and numerous farms had to give up. The population decreased to 270 in 1975, a size that the place held until the early 1990s. In the 2000 census, the place still had 138 inhabitants. The population rose to 163 in 2010.
