history

Schönbrunn Manor - around 1850

The place was probably founded as the Vorwerk of Voigtsberg Castle and was first mentioned in a document in 1378. The German name suggests good spring water or the beautiful view. In 1425 , the Landgrave of Thuringia Frederick the Younger enfeoffed the brothers Ulrich and Nickel Sack with the farm at Geilsdorf and the estates at Schönbrunn. In 1588 the city of Oelsnitz bought the now two Vorwerke Schönbrunn and had to sell them on to the von Reitzenstein family in the Thirty Years' War in 1629 . On August 13, 1632, General Holk and his troops plundered, murdered and pillaged Schönbrunn and the neighboring Oelsnitz. For 150 years, from 1794 to 1945, the manor belonged to the Stengel family , who were expropriated in 1945.

Schönbrunn has been parish to Oelsnitz since 1582. In 1907 the place got its own cemetery and chapel.

Mining (iron ore, tin) was carried out in and around Schönbrunn for several centuries. The Schönbrunn fluorspar mine gained greater fame . The place belonged to the Voigtsberg office until the 19th century .
