The Craeybeckxtunnel is a motorway tunnel in the south of the Belgian city of Antwerp . The tunnel, which is more of an enclosure, is 1,600 meters long. It was built to protect the wooded area, and especially the nearby hospital, from the noise of increasing car traffic. The tunnel is part of the A1 , which runs from Brussels via Antwerp to the Netherlands . At the northern tunnel portal, the A1 crosses the Antwerp R1 motorway ring , from which almost every city in Belgium can be reached via motorways. It was opened to road traffic in 1981. The tunnel consists of two tubes, each housing four lanes and a shoulder.

The tunnel is named after Lode Craeybeckx, who was mayor of Antwerp from 1947 to 1976.
