Craigcaffie Tower , also Craig Caffie Tower or Craigcaffie Castle , is a tower house near the Scottish town of Stranraer in the Council Area Dumfries and Galloway . In 1972 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. A former additional classification as a Scheduled Monument has now been lifted.

history

King Robert the Bruce gave the lands of Craigcaffie to the son of the Earl of Carrick in the early 14th century . They were initially inherited within the family. Craigcaffie Tower was built in the 16th century, probably around 1570. In 1791, Craigcaffie went to John Dalrymple , the sixth Earl of Stair . After Craigcaffie Tower became vacant during the 20th century, it was restored in the 1980s and used as a residential building from then on.

The Tower House is about 3.5 kilometers northeast of Stranraer and a few hundred meters from the east bank of Loch Ryan . The elongated Craigcaffie Tower has a footprint of 9.4 mx 6 m. Originally a ditch protected the defense tower, but it is no longer recognizable today.

The masonry of the three-story building is made of sandstone and is plastered with Harl along the facade . The windows are of different sizes, but are largely symmetrical. The north-facing front is two axes wide. To the left of the ornamented wooden entrance door there is a loopholes . Above the door there are the remains of an enclosure. Another entrance door on the south side is of a later date. Parapet corridors with concluding corner curls jut out at the front ends . The building closes with a slate-covered gable roof with dormers .
