Cramlington is a city in north-east England in the county of Northumberland , 19 kilometers (12 english miles) north of Newcastle upon Tyne . The city has around 39,000 inhabitants (as of 2004). The name of the city suggests a Danish or Anglo-Saxon origin, since "-ton" = "the city" means.

history

Cramlington's first charter dates back to 1135. It was an arable town until the 19th century when coal mining was introduced in 1824. During the 20th century, the city expanded. Today there are many housing developments, but no more coal mines. The city is now a commuter city for professionals working in Newcastle upon Tyne . In addition, the environment is characterized by agriculture.
