Emergence

The project came about as part of the renaturation of an open pit mine at Blagdon Hall, in which coal , slate and firebrick were extracted. Instead of pouring the accumulated rubble back into the open pit, it was decided to create a public park out of it. The figure was built from 1.5 million tons of earth on the 19 hectare park. It is 200 meters long and up to 34 meters high.

The figure was designed by Charles Jencks , an American landscape architect . The £ 3 million cost was borne by mine operator Banks Group and Matt Ridley , the owner of the Blagdon Hall estate.

The planning took five years, the construction took another two years. The park was opened in 2012 by Princess Anne .
