The Crater Lake (also known as Jade Crater Lake ) is, and this also literally translated, a crater lake in the south of Deception Island in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands . It is located northwest of Mount Kirkwood .
The lake owes its descriptive name to the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee , which named it on July 7, 1959. Polish scientists extended the name to include the greenish color of the lake, which is reminiscent of jade .
