The Izumo ( Japanese い ず も ; DDH-183) is a helicopter carrier of the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Forces put into service on March 25, 2015 and the type ship of the Izumo class . The name was taken from the historical province of Izumo .

construction

The Izumo was laid down in the shipyard of Japan Marine United Corporation , a subsidiary of IHI , in Yokohama on January 27, 2012. It was launched on August 6, 2013 and its home port is Yokosuka . The construction costs amounted to the equivalent of 1.2 billion US dollars. For constitutional reasons, helicopter carriers of the self-defense forces such as the Izumo are officially referred to as “helicopter destroyers ” (DDH, Japanese ヘ リ コ プ タ ー 搭載 護衛艦 , herikoputā tōsai goeikan , the Japanese term for “destroyer” literally meaning “escort ship”).

Calls

In August 2015, took Izumo in a civil protection exercise of authority for maritime security in Tokyo in part.

The Izumo began its first significant mission on May 1, 2017, when it set off for a 100-day training mission in the South China Sea together with the anti-submarine destroyer Sazanami . There she accompanied the bulk carrier USNS Richard E. Byrd and carried out maneuvering and communication exercises with the Littoral Combat Ship Coronado . She arrived in Singapore on May 14, 2017 to attend a naval event. Further exercises with the United States Navy , the Indian Navy and other ASEAN naval forces are planned.
