The Puig de Querroig is a 672 meter high mountain over which the French-Spanish border runs between the province of Girona and Roussillon ( Département Pyrénées-Orientales ). At its summit in 10./11. Century, a now-ruined castle built.

location

The southern slope of Puig de Querroig belongs to the municipality of the north of Catalonia located Portbou ( Alt Empordà ). Its north ridge forms the border between the two French communities Banyuls-sur-Mer (west side) and Cerbère (east side).

The line of the border was provided with a trigonometric point (reference number 312076002) by the Catalan Geografic Nacional Institute .

The Puig de Querroig can be seen from a great distance and is the first significant elevation in a westerly direction from the Mediterranean after the Puig Cervera .

Access is usually via a forest road from Coll dels Belitres , which is about 3.5 kilometers to the east. The path follows the topographical ridge that forms the state border and leads over the Puig dels Frares and the Coll de la Farella to the summit.

geology

The Puig de Querroig is made up of Paleozoic slates , which belong to the shell of metasediments of the Albères massif . The rocks were regionally metamorphosed towards the end of the Variscan mountain formation in the Upper Carboniferous and are now available as green schist (relatively low metamorphic chlorite zone).

Castle complex

The castle complex ( Castell de Querroig ) on the summit is likely to have been built in the 10th or 11th century. After the complex fell into disrepair, a round watchtower was built on the ruins in the 14th or 15th century , of which the first 7 meters can still be seen today.
