Crematogaster mimosae is a species of ant in the genus Crematogaster . It is common in East Africa and the Arabian Peninsula.
The species is divided into two subspecies:
- Crematogaster mimosae mimosae (Santschi, 1914)
- Crematogaster mimosae tenuipilis (Santschi, 1937)
Way of life
It is one of four species of ants (besides Crematogaster gerstaeckeri sjostedti , Crematogaster nigriceps and Tetraponera penzigi ) that feed on the Acacia drepanolobium , the flute ajaziene , and only occur on it. They defend them against animals of all kinds. Giraffes , elephants and black rhinos avoid the trees that are populated with this species of ant. They attack the animals and drive them away with numerous bites. The ant uses vibrations to recognize that an enemy is present.
