Creole (markup)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Creole is a simplified markup language that was designed as an overarching standard for different variants of Wikitext .

target

Creole is designed to allow users to easily transfer documents between different wikis. In addition, it should be easy to learn and use and be based on elements of existing markups from various wiki systems. For this purpose, common markup languages were examined; the most frequently used formatting commands were included in the specification. This was done in an open and pluralistic process in order to achieve the greatest possible acceptance of the new standard.

development

This project was launched at the 2006 WikiSym conference, based on an idea by Ward Cunningham at Wikimania 2006. Preparations are currently underway for the start of the construction of the next version, which will standardize even more functions.

The currently released standard is version 1.0. Development was "frozen" for the next two years after it was released on July 4, 2007 in order to facilitate the dissemination and implementation of the specification. Nevertheless, the discussion about further changes and additions for future versions will be continued.

Currently, 13 wiki systems fully or partially support the Creole syntax; among them are well-known and common systems such as MoinMoin -Wiki and DokuWiki . Eleven other Wiki software projects are planning support or are at least interested in it. This includes, among other things, the widely used MediaWiki system used by Wikipedia .

In addition to wiki systems, there are now other platforms with Creole, such as the online vehicle market mobile.de , which allows Creole in its vehicle description texts .
