Creutznacher house
The Creutznacher Haus is a monument on the south side of the market square of the city of Eisenach in Thuringia . The postal address is Markt 9.
History and architecture
The wealthy merchant and patrician Conrad Creutznacher had the town house, later known as Creutznacher Haus, built in the Renaissance style next to the Georgenkirche between 1507 and 1539 . The entrance portal to the market square was built in 1559 in place of the older driveway. The house served as a residential and commercial building as well as a warehouse. The design corresponds to that of the neighboring Lutherhaus and City Hall buildings designed by city architect Hans Leonhardt .
Duke Johann Ernst von Sachsen-Eisenach acquired the building around 1600 and had it integrated into his residential palace on the esplanade, which occupied the south side of the market square, then known as the Wednesday market. When the residence was partially razed around 1742, the residence house was retained and from then on served as an administrative building for the financial and judicial authorities of the Grand Duchy of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach and the State of Thuringia, for which it was rebuilt several times.
The initially plastered framework on the upper floors was exposed during a restoration in 1885. Plans from the 1930s to accommodate the Carl Alexander Library in the Creutznacher Haus were not implemented. During the air raids on Eisenach in World War II , the building, as well as the historic buildings in the area, were damaged. The damage was largely repaired by 1950. During the GDR era , the building served as the administration building for VEB Kraftverkehr.
The building complex was extensively renovated from 2002 to 2005, whereby the half-timbered construction was completely removed and rebuilt true to the original using original components that were still preserved and usable; Parts that were not listed as part of the repair of war damage were replaced. A construction freeze was temporarily imposed in January 2004 due to false ceilings being broken out without permission. Today the building houses apartments, a tourism office and an event hall. During the renovation and expansion of the nearby Luther House, the Creutznacher House served as an alternative location for the Luther exhibition .
