Crevan or Forte Crevan is a small island in the north of the Venice lagoon . It has an area of 3,651 m², of which 377 m² are built on.

history

During the French rule at the beginning of the 19th century a chain of small fortresses, called Redouten , was built at the confluence of the Canale di Crevan and the Canale di Burano. Forte Crevan was one of them.

The Austrians who followed the French from 1815 onwards built a “blockhouse” in the interior of the Crevan Redoubt between 1832 and 1849. From here the access to the Palude of Burano should be guarded, an area mostly under water with its own flora and fauna. Shortly thereafter, houses were built for permanent residence. A garden was created for this purpose.

In 1866 the island came to Italy as part of Venice.

The buildings and the garden were in good condition around 1999. The island was owned by the politician and entrepreneur Giorgio Panto , who had a fatal accident in his helicopter while leaving the island on November 26, 2006 . In 1995 he sought a mandate for the Lega Autonomia Veneta , and in June 2004 he founded the Progetto NordEst , which calls for more independence for the Veneto region and the neighboring regions.
