Cricket (musical)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cricket is a musical from 1986 by Andrew Lloyd Webber (music) and Tim Rice (text). It is their shortest musical with almost half an hour playing time.

Cricket was written on the occasion of the 60th birthday of the British Queen Elizabeth II . So it found its world premiere on June 18, 1986 in front of the royal family at Windsor Castle . Directed by Trevor Nunn , Tim Rice himself took on a role. Since then, the piece has only been performed two more times, both in 1986 in closed society.

Cricket is about the love affair between the noble Emma and the cricket player Donald. Tim Rice took the opportunity to erect a memorial to his favorite sport from which he was named. As in Chess , he tried to attach a metaphorical meaning to the sport and to show parallels to the life and love of the main actors in the course of the game .

As is typical of Andrew Lloyd Webber, he has since reused cricket's music in his larger productions, particularly in the two subsequent musicals Aspects of Love and Sunset Boulevard .
