Crioceris paracenthesis (often also Crioceris paracentesis ) is a beetle fromthe leaf beetle family and the subfamily of the cherries . The genus Crioceris comprises nine species , seven of which are found in Europe.

Notes on the name

The species was first described by Linnaeus in 1767 as the first species in the appendix to the 12th edition of Systema naturae under the name Chrysomela paracenthesis . The relatively detailed description contains no indication of why Linnaeus chose the species name paracenthesis . According to Schenkling , the correct spelling is paracentesis and the word is from Altgr. παρακέντησις (parakéntesis) derived for "piercing". According to a Spanish source on entomological terms, παρακέντησις is translated as "abdomen puncture". Since the term is also used outside of entomology , the reference to the beetle remains speculative.

The genus name Crioceris is from Altgr. κριός “kriós” for “ram” and κέρας “kéras” for “horn”. It goes back to Geoffroy in 1762, but was awarded to Müller in 1764 for a long time due to nomenclature disputes. Geoffroy explicitly mentions that the name alludes to the sensor construction. These are are the same thickness throughout and their short and round elements reminiscent of a kind of clockwork ( fr Cordonet).

Physique of the beetle

The cylindrical beetle is slightly shorter than the other species of Crioceris and, like them, very colorful. The head and underside are black, the upper side red-yellow, yellow and black. The drawing is not uniform, several variants have been described.

The black head is sloping downwards. It is finely dotted. The parting is bald, in front of it the head is very finely haired yellow. The eyes stand out strongly. The eleven-link antennae are pearl-like, black at the base and brownish towards the end. They are turned in front of the eyes and reach about half the length of the body.

The red-brown pronotum is spherical to cylindrical, the base is pinched off by a transverse impression. It is fine and absent-mindedly dotted. Above it has two oblong, washed-out dark spots parallel to each other.

The elytra are yellowish with a striking black markings. Each has ten very regular stripes of dots. A wide black stripe runs along the wing cover seam , but it does not reach the end of the wing cover or at least becomes significantly narrower apically. In the original description three spots are mentioned on each wing cover. The foremost is on the shoulders. It can be divided into two spots, the smaller part of the spot being a little behind the shoulder and further out. The back spot is at the level where the black vertical stripe disappears. It is transverse, may or may not touch the strip, and it can also be designed as a transverse strip. Approximately in the middle between the back and front spots sits a third spot, which is often regressed (also described as Crioceris suturalis .) The tip of the wing cover is usually black.

The legs are also colored. The legs are predominantly black, the rails reddish yellow, at least blackish at the end. This also applies to the tarsi. These all have only four visible links. The claws are completely separated from each other.

Way of life

The species develops almost exclusively on Asparagus acutifolius . It is often found together with other species of the genus Crioceris . The beetle, like the other species of the genus, can produce chirping noises by rubbing the hind wings on the last abdominal star.

distribution

The species is widespread around the Mediterranean, the northernmost report comes from Bulgaria.
