Croceverde or Croceverde-Giardini (or also known as the singular Giardina ) is a rural district ( Borgata di campagna ) in the southeast of the metropolitan region of Palermo . Croceverde-Giardini has about 1500 inhabitants and is about 95 meters above sea level in the Conca d'Oro plain , which is characterized by the agricultural use of gardens and citrus groves . In the north-west, the town borders on Ciaculli with the street of the same name, Via Ciaculli, which also runs through the hamlet of Croceverde-Giardini, and in the south-east on Gibilrossa, a town that belongs to the town of Misilmeri, which was then made famous by the Garibaldi campaign . Misilmeri is near the municipality of Villabate . The panorama of Palermo can be seen from the slopes of the neighboring Monte Grifone . Croceverde is connected to the center of Palermo by the AMAT line 212.

One of the most famous houses in the municipality of Croceverde-Giardini is the villa of the powerful mafia boss Michele Greco , who was born here in 1924 . His family, the Grecos , which were divided into a tribe from Croceverde-Giardini and two from Ciaculli and who fought against each other in a bloody family feud after the Second World War, dominated the Sicilian mafia for a long time . Michele Greco and his brother Salvatore often ran their business from their family estate Fondo La Favarella, which was located in the middle of a large lemon grove and offered shelter to some mafioso. Here were feasts held and hunting events conducted. Under the plantation is a system of irrigation tunnels in which Michele Greco hid when the police wanted him.

The area around Croceverde-Giardini and Ciaculli offers an ideal climate for the cultivation of mandarins of the “Mandarino Tardivo di Ciaculli - the late Ciaculli mandarine”, which is exported as a tropical fruit all over the world. On the steep slopes of Monte Grifone (up to 50% gradient) of Monte Grifone, tangerines are cultivated in terraces. Further, medlar and vegetables grown.

A big problem is illegal construction activities, which can hardly be contained by state regulation and which have led to the degradation of sensitive soils. Croceverde-Giardini, Ciaculli and Belmonte Chiavelli are threatened by hydrogeological instability. During the rainy months in the Vallone di Croceverde there are frequent mudslides that uproot trees and threaten Croceverde-Giardini again and again, as was the case in September 2009.
