The Croll Building at 1400 Webster Street

Today's Croll Building in Alameda , California served as Croll's Gardens and Hotel for many boxing legends around the turn of the century (1883-1914) as a residence and training facility. Well-known guests were James J. Corbett , Bob Fitzsimmons , Jim Jeffries and Jack Johnson .

Today the hotel houses a restaurant called 1400 Bar & Grill , there is an apartment hotel on the first floor , and offices on the second floor. The decor of the restaurant is reminiscent of the time in which the neighboring amusement park Neptune Beach was in operation (1917–1939).

The Croll Building is recognized as a significant historical landmark worth protecting by both the State of California and the US Department of the Interior.
