Jim Jeffries (born April 15, 1875 in Carroll , Ohio , † March 3, 1953 in Burbank , California ) was an American boxer and world heavyweight champion.
Jeffries was the son of Alexis Jeffries , a farmer and priest, and Rebecca Boyer Jeffries .
He became world heavyweight champion in boxing on June 9, 1899 against Bob Fitzsimmons by knockout in round 11. He weighed about 94 kilograms at the time of winning the title, Fitzsimmons about 78.
Jeffries ended his career on May 13, 1905 and gave up the title of World Heavyweight Champion . In the fight for his successor - Marvin Hart against Jack Root in Reno ( Nevada ) - on July 3, 1905, he was the referee.
He was played up by the sports press at the time for the "Great White Hope" against Jack Johnson , when this world champion had become by beating Tommy Burns . Jeffries did not appear at the time, however, because it was not common to let white against black athletes because of racial segregation . He denied Johnson the official title fight.
Jack London encouraged Jeffries after Johnson won the title in 1909 with the words “it's up to you, Jim” to urge him to fight the racially defamed champion.
In 1910 he, who had only devoted himself to farming for years, finally competed against Jack Johnson for the world championship and lost in the 14th round by breaking off when his seconds threw in the towel. After 6 years of abstinence from the ring, he was no longer in shape; this was his only defeat. For the fight, Jeffries had to reduce his "retired weight" by 45 kg. His fee was $ 100,000.
In 1990 Jeffries was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame .
