Cross Kirk

The Cross Kirk is a ruined church in the center of the Scottish town of Peebles in the Council Area Scottish Borders . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

The Scottish King Alexander III. donated the church after he had found a cross on the site in 1261, the creation of which he estimated to be in the 3rd century and associated with Nikolaus von Myra . The oldest known written evidence of a church building at the site dates from 1296. In 1474, the Cross Kirk was elevated to a convent of the Trinitarian Order . Farm and monastery buildings were then erected on the north side. In 1549, English troops burned the facility down. There are indications that the monks had restored the church before the dissolution of the order around 1561. After a new church was built in 1784, the Cross Kirk became obsolete.
