Crown Castle is a US telecommunications network operator based in Houston . The company claims it operates over 40,000 transmission towers and 70,000 small cells for wireless communications, as well as a fiber optic cable network over 75,000 miles (~ 121,000 km) in length in the United States. The systems are leased directly to providers of telecommunications services . Crown Castle was founded in Houston in 1994 and at that time had 133 cell towers. By 1998 this number had increased to 1,400. The company went public that same year and the company's shares were listed on NASDAQ . In 2001 the listing was moved from the NASDAQ to the NYSE . In the following years, the company grew in particular by taking over competitors and thereby added several thousand transmitter masts and small cells as well as several thousand kilometers of fiber optic cables to its managed infrastructure portfolio.
