Cuco Valoy

Cuco Valoy (* 1937 in Manoguayabo near Santo Domingo ) is a Dominican singer, also known as El Brujo ("the magician").

Life

In his childhood, Valoy attended the national conservatory . Then he studied music. In the late 1950s, his career began with the group Los Ahijados and his brother Martín. They were inspired by Son Cubano . During the sixties he founded the radio station Radio Tropical and the label Tropical , with which he could support Dominican musicians. In 1975 Cuco Valoy founded the Los Virtuosos (or La Tribu ) orchestra consisting of 12 musicians who included salsa and merengue pieces in their repertoire . Two of his sons played there, especially his son Ramón Orlando , who ran it from 1980. Los Virtuosos recorded a number of albums for the Discolor and Kubaney labels.

The singer is also known in Colombia , where he won the Congo de Oro four times . Valoy wrote around 300 songs and released around 40 albums during his career.
