Cuerudos de Ciudad Victoria

Cuerudos de Ciudad Victoria is a former football club from Ciudad Victoria , the capital of the Mexican state Tamaulipas .

history

The club was founded in 1959 under the leadership of Simón Lan and Herminio Saíz to get a starting place in the Segunda División in the 1959/60 season . The club was permanently represented there for the next 19 years until the end of the 1977/78 season. Only the Petroleros de Salamanca (22 years from 1964 to 1986) and the Reboceros de La Piedad (19 years from 1953 to 1972) worked longer or for the same length of time without interruption in the Segunda División, which at the time was still second class .

At the end of their first season, the team, composed almost without exception of amateur players from the old Liga Municipal de Victoria , landed on the penultimate place in the table. The sporting failure resulted in profound changes both in management and in the team of players.

Although the Cuerudos were able to improve in sporting terms in the following years and enjoyed great support from the population, they increasingly suffered from financial problems in the 1970s and were finally forced to withdraw from professional football at the end of the 1977/78 season .

Rivalry with UAT

For many, especially older, football fans from Ciudad Victoria, the Cuerudos were the actual club in the city: on the one hand, because the origins of their city rival Correcaminos lie in the port city of Tampico and, on the other hand, because the "Corre" is a product of the Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas is why they lack a deeper anchoring in parts of the population.
