Petroleros de Salamanca FC is a former football club from the city of Salamanca in the Mexican state of Guanajuato . Between 1957 and 1986, the club was represented for more than a quarter of a century in the then second-rate Segunda División and later also played in the Primera División 'A' , the new Mexican second football league, introduced in 1994/95 .

history

First, the Salamanca FC worked in the four seasons from 1957/58 to 1960/61 in the Segunda División. In 1964 the club returned to the league and remained there for 22 years until the 1985/86 season. This makes the Petroleros the club that has played the longest without interruption in the Segunda División, which was the second division between 1950 and 1994 . In this era, the team celebrated their greatest successes in the early 1970s, when they twice reached the semi-finals for the second division championship. This she lost in both cases: 1971/72 against the UANL Tigres with the overall result of 1: 4 and 1973/74 with the overall result of 2: 3 against the Club Universidad de Guadalajara .

For the 2005/06 season, the Petroleros acquired the license from Celaya FC and were henceforth represented in the Primera División 'A' for a period of four years until this league was converted into the new Liga de Ascenso at the end of the 2008/09 season.

After the Petroleros reached the Liguillas for the first time in the Clausura 2006 , where they lost 1: 1 and 1: 2 in the quarterfinals against the later promoted Gallos Blancos de Querétaro , the subsequent Apertura 2006 was their most successful season ever. First they won the preliminary round group A consisting of twelve teams and then penetrated undefeated (including a 2-1 and 2-0 success against the traditional club León FC ) to the final, which they (after a 1-1 away and a 2-2 in front of their own audience) ultimately lost 5-6 on penalties against Puebla FC , who with this win laid the foundation for his return to the first division at the end of the 2006/07 season.

In his last two seasons in Primera División 'A', the Petroleros entered into a cooperation agreement with San Luis FC , because from the start of the 2007/08 season the Mexican Football Association only allowed teams in Primera A that were with a club in the Primera División cooperated. In the last half season of the existence of the Primera A, the Petroleros reached the Liguillas again and penetrated through a 2-0 and 1-0 success over the former first division side Dorados de Sinaloa into the semifinals, where they against the later first division side Xoloitzcuintles de Tijuana (1: 2 and 0: 2) were defeated.

When the Liga de Ascenso was introduced at the beginning of the 2009/10 season, the Petroleros lost their place in the second division and instead took part in the now third-rate Segunda División. At the end of the same season, the Petroleros withdrew from professional football and announced their dissolution.
