from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cully ( Irish An Choillidh ) was a Franciscan convent in Killoughey west of Tullamore in County Offaly in Ireland , which was founded after 1677.

history

Franciscans had resided in Killeigh since 1293 . This convent was closed and demolished in 1598 under the Penal Laws . Nevertheless, some of the friars stayed in the region, others moved to Killurin and later to Cully. In 1677 Charles O'Molloy applied to Pope Innocent XI. the establishment of a Franciscan branch in Rahan ; this branch was then established in neighboring Cully and took on the brothers from Killeigh and Killurin. The last friar in Cully died in 1781. In 1786 Bishop Plunkett made an unsuccessful attempt to revive the convent in Cully. Only a gable wall remained from the complex.
