Curionópolis is a city founded in 1988 in the Brazilian state of Pará . It emerged after a gold rush in February 1980 in the adjacent Serra Pelada and swelled quickly by the more than 50,000 gold prospectors ( Garimpeiros ) that were attracted . It is named after Major Sebastião Rodrigues de Moura, called Curio, who introduced law and order after initial anarchy.
