The Curragh Coal Mine is an open pit coal mine in the Blackwater area of central Queensland , Australia . The coal reserves are estimated at 88 million tons of coking coal . This makes the open pit one of the largest coal fields in the eastern hemisphere. The mine had an annual production capacity of 7 million tons of bituminous coal until 2012 . The mine extends over 12,600 hectares within the Rangal Coal Measures area in the Bowen Basin .

Surname

The mine is named after the Curragh Plain in Ireland.

The mine is located 30 km north of Blackwater in Central Queensland. Other open pit mines are in the immediate vicinity, including the Curragh North Mine and the Yarrabe Mine . From there, the mine belt extends north along the Bowen Basin. Other mines are: Oaky Creek Mine , German Creek Mine and Norwich Park Mine , which are connected by rail lines.

In 2012 the production of the mine was increased to 8.5 million tons annually, while the operation was switched from a seven-day week to a five-day week.

The Curragh Coal Mine was initially owned by Wesfarmers Resources and is expected to operate through 2025. Thiess removes overburden .

In 2017 the Coronado Coal Group acquired the mine from Wesfarmers Resources.

The coal is transported away via the Blackwater Railway System and the Port of Gladstone . Some of the coal is used to generate electricity in the Stanwell Power Station .
