Blackwater

Blackwater is a city in the east of the Australian state of Queensland . The 2016 census counted 4,618 residents.

Six large open-cast coal mines and an underground coal mine have changed the landscape around the city and are at the same time the most important employers for its population. South of the city is Blackdown Tableland National Park on the ridge of the Great Dividing Range .

The closest major cities are Rockhampton 198 km east on the coast and Emerald 79 km west. All three cities are on the Capricorn Highway .

Naming

Blackwater was probably named after Blackwater Creek , a tributary of the Mackenzie River . This creek carried black water, which was caused by the tree roots growing in the creek. The coal deposits were discovered by Ludwig Leichhardt in 1845 .
