The Cusanus-Gymnasium Erkelenz Europaschule (CGE) is a state high school in the city of Erkelenz , named after the German canon lawyer , philosopher, bishop and cardinal Nikolaus von Kues (Latinized: Cusanus). The Cusanus-Gymnasium had 1780 students in 2007, making it one of the largest high schools in North Rhine-Westphalia.

history

The "Higher Citizens' School for Boys" , founded in 1830 as the successor to an old Latin school , had become the " Royal Progymnasium" in 1856 and "Humanistic full grammar school" on May 12, 1923 . In 1906 a new school building was built on the south promenade, for which the drilling pioneer Anton Raky had donated 50,000 marks. Since 1905 there had also been the "Higher Girls' School St. Canisius" on the corner of Westpromenade and Zehnthofweg , a middle school run by the school sisters of the " Poor Maids of Jesus Christ ". May 1929 the grammar school received an extension. In 1937, during the Nazi era , the humanistic grammar school was converted into a " high school for boys" . On September 2, 1944, the school was closed because of the approaching front.

The grammar school and girls' school were completely destroyed in a bombing raid on January 16, 1945, and from December 1, 1950, boys and girls were taught together in a newly built grammar school on Zehnthofweg. The originally humanistic and finally modern language grammar school was divided into a boys 'grammar school and a girls' grammar school in 1962. New buildings were built for both schools on Schulring. Today the comprehensive secondary school is located in the old building.

The boys' grammar school moved into its new school in the 1965/66 school year. It was transformed into a co-educational school in 1978 and named after the polymath Nikolaus von Kues (in Latinized form: Cusanus) in 1980 , whose last secretary Peter Wimars came from Erkelenz.

In 2009, the Cusanus-Gymnasium Erkelenz was recognized as a European school by the Ministry for Schools and Further Education of North Rhine-Westphalia . This was followed by the renaming to Cusanus-Gymnasium Erkelenz European School .
