Cybele (named after the ancient goddess Kybele ) is a band that was formed in 1994 in the Norwegian capital, Oslo .

history

Emulating their circle of friends, some musically inexperienced young women decided to form a band at a party. They chose the name Cybele because it refers to the last matriarchal religion. Cybele first produced the demo Atys' Reverie (1996), then released the debut album Brightly Blackheart (1997). After the EP Songs of Soil (1999), Interactive Playground was released in 2001 by Voices of Wonder . The band, which had several line-up changes behind them, broke new ground - inspired by Massive Attack's album Mezzanine - by using samples . The guitarist Elisabeth Østeby explained the departure from the all- women band and the metal sound of the early days with the fact that they had "never somehow defined themselves" and that everything could be "completely different again". There have been no further publications since then.

style

The sound on the demo Atys' Reverie and the debut album Brightly Blackhearted is stylistically assigned to atmospheric Gothic and Doom Metal. Robert Müller from Metal Hammer recognized classic New Wave influences from the Siouxsie and the Banshees category . These would be combined with rocking basic structures formed by hard guitars. This points in the direction of Gothic, without creating an apathetic or depressive mood, but rather is "vibrantly alive".

On the second album of the until now all female band, a stylistic change of course was evident. The online magazine heavyhardes.de was Interactive Playground as "mediocre, easily digestible album" denotes that sounds "like the more pop version of any 08/15-Gothic band". The English online magazine allmusic.com , however, described it as "one of the better Goth / Alternative albums 2001". The adjustment of the album, it was said in the Eclipsed review, was ballad-like and melancholic, with the songs bearing different stylistic approaches among themselves, but also within themselves. For example, the opening piece Unison suggests "once in the direction of the Gathering , once in the direction of Björk , just to let the listener fish completely in the dark". In a festival mood, the Eclipsed editorial team summarized the advantages of Cybele: “They are open to a variety of musical expressions, whether indie, gothic, atmospheric rock, hard rock or even alternative pop.” According to their own statement, the texts are mostly socially critical .
