Cyclocheilichthys enoplos (Soldier River Barb, Chinese 杜氏 圆 唇 鱼, Chhkok in Cambodia, in Thai ปลา หนามหลัง and Cá Cóc in Vietnam) is a medium-sized barbel species from Indochina .

description

The fish species has four barbels and a very long dorsal fin. The Soldier River Barb is on average 45 centimeters long, but in exceptional cases up to 75 centimeters. In 2009, a Soldier River Barb weighing 5.05 kilograms was caught in the Thai commercial fishing lake Monster Lake, and specimens up to 10 kilograms were caught at the Khone Falls on the border between Cambodia and Laos.

distribution

The Soldier River Barb is common in the river basin of the Mekong and its tributaries and occurs in Thailand , Laos , Vietnam and Cambodia , as well as in Malaysia and Indonesia .

Way of life

Cyclocheilichthys enoplos prefers to be in the mean water and near the bottom of rivers. It feeds mainly on molluscs, roots of aquatic plants, zooplankton and green algae. Young fish feed exclusively on zooplankton, while adult specimens switch to insect larvae, crustaceans and small fish as their body size increases. The spawning season begins with the rainy season , sexually mature fish migrate to the floodplain and flooded gallery forests and spawn there. They return to the rivers from October to December. The fish species has a distinctive migratory behavior, so its migration from the region near Phnom Penh to the Khone Falls was observed from November to February and a migration downstream from May to August, which ends in October / November with the highest flood levels in the Mekong Delta . Young fish and subadults are involved in the migration, while only very large specimens up to 90 centimeters in length have been observed in the region around the Khone Falls. Above the Khone Falls from April to September, when the first monsoon rains set in towards the end of the dry season, mature animals migrate to their spawning areas in the murky and sediment-churned water.

Use

Cyclocheilichthys enoplos is a popular food fish in Indochina and is kept in aquaculture . Spawning can be stimulated by giving them hormones. Soldier River Barbs still account for 8% of catches in Cambodia's Takeo Province. Also in the Tonle Sap lake belongs Oreochromis enoplos still the most economically important fish species Cambodia
