Cynolebias is a genus of fish from the Rivulidae family, belongs to the group of the egg-laying toothcarps and occurs in eastern South America from northern Argentina ( Buenos Aires province ) to the mouth of the Amazon .
features
Cynolebias species have a more or less high, laterally flattened body, are 5 to 13.3 cm long and are in most cases brownish in color with stripes or dots on the sides of the body. Males have higher and longer dorsal and anal fins than females and the number of respective fin rays is greater in males. Cynolebias differs from the closely related genus Simpsonichthys in the presence of pelvic fins . Cynolebias species are seasonal fish , i. In other words, they inhabit bodies of water that regularly dry out, their eggs, which are sunk into the ground during spawning, go through so-called diapause and the juvenile fish only hatch when it rains at the end of the dry season.
