Cyriacus (Makuria)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cyriacus was a king of Makuria (a medieval Christian state in what is now Sudan ) who ruled from about 747 to 768.

Around the year 748 the Patriarch of Alexandria , Michael , was captured by the emir of Egypt Abd el-Malik , because he was in correspondence with Cyriacus, but also to extort money. Cyriacus demanded the release of the patriarch, to which the emir did not respond. Cyriacus then moved to Egypt with an army, allegedly with 100,000 horsemen. He went looting and murdering through the country and reached Cairo , where he rested with his army in front of the city. In the meantime the emir released the patriarch, after which Cyriacus withdrew to Makuria.
