Dùn Èistean

Dùn Èistean ( Scottish Gaelic Dùn Othail ) is a multi-periodically used dun on a stack connected by a bridge near Knockaird ( Scottish Gaelic Cnoc Àrd ) in the Port of Ness ( Scottish Gaelic Port Nis ) region on the northeast coast of Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides , Scotland .

The ruins of two large buildings and groups of interconnected cell-like structures can be seen between the grassy hillsides, the pond, and a low lawn wall that encloses the grounds. The most noticeable feature is the large round heap of rubble from a broch at the highest point of the stack on the northeast side.

The island has everything necessary for its use, even a drinking water supply in the form of an artificial pond. According to tradition, Dùn Èistean is a traditional stronghold of Clan Morrison - from the 15th to 17th centuries a very powerful family within the lordship of the islands.

There are a number of locations similar to Dùn Èistean on the Lewis coast and the Western Isles. There is evidence of activity in the Iron Age or in earlier periods. Similar evidence is probably waiting to be discovered in Dùn Èistean below the later buildings.

Nearby are the Clach Stein .
