The Dünkreuz near Deuna is a stone cross near Deuna in the Eichsfeld district in northern Thuringia .

The cross is located southwest of Deuna at the foot of the Dün . Due to its size and its location on the Düne ridge, the cross can be seen by all municipalities of the Eichsfelder-Kessel administrative community. In the immediate vicinity there is a natural monument in Eichsfeld, an approx. 400 year old linden tree with a circumference of 6 m. There is also a spring there, the Walsborn.

history

The groundbreaking ceremony took place on September 19, 1934. After construction had been halted in the meantime, the cross was completed in the summer of 1935. It was inaugurated in August 1935 by Bishop Joseph Damian Schmitt from Fulda. It is a massive stone cross made from local shell limestone and measures around 15 meters high. The base of the cross is decorated with a line from the Eichsfeldlied: “Home where the cross rises from the hill and tells you about God's love. Iseke. ”The cross is also known as the St. Josef Heinrich Cross . The heraldic symbol typical of Eichsfeld , the Kurmainzer wheel , is incorporated on the side facing away from the Dün . The cross forms the end of a station path that leads from the municipality of Deuna . This was built in the years 1866–1867 and ended with a baroque wayside shrine from 1787.
