The Dark Bock ( Asemum striatum ) is a beetle from the family of longhorn beetles (Cerambycidae). The species is the only one of its kind in Central Europe, where it occurs frequently.

features

The beetles are 8 to 23 millimeters long. They are black in color, the pronotum is very densely dotted and granular. Some impressions can be seen in the middle, the widest being in the back half. The wings are very densely structured and wrinkled. They each have two to four longitudinal ribs. More rarely they are brown or reddish instead of black, or only brown or yellow at the edges. The antennae are shorter than half the length of the body, the legs are also short.

Occurrence and habitat

The species is widespread in the Palearctic and is also found in the far north of Europe. The species is locally distributed in England and Scotland. In southern Europe they are found in higher mountain areas than in the north. It colonizes coniferous forests, especially pine forests from the plains to the mountainous region at the tree line.

Way of life

The adults hide under bark during the day and only fly in the late afternoon and evening. They occur from May to August and have a life expectancy of around 14 days. The larvae prefer to live in freshly cut pine stumps and felled trunks, but also in damaged living trees. Their feeding tunnels have an oval cross-section of 3 by 7 millimeters. The adult beetles hatch from elliptical openings, often from wood that has already been built.
