The DAS Aktiengesellschaft existed from 1928 to 2015. Today, the DAS is the brand for legal protection in the Ergo Versicherungsgruppe AG . Ergo Versicherung AG as part of ERGO Group AG belongs to the reinsurer Munich Re .
history
DAS was founded in 1928 under the name DAS Deutscher Automobil Schutz Aktiengesellschaft in Berlin as a legal service provider for motorists. This made it the first legal expenses insurer in Germany. In 1941 the service provider became an insurance company: DAS Rechtsschutz-Versicherungs-Aktiengesellschaft. The company headquarters was relocated to Munich.
In 1954, the restriction of benefits to the automotive sector was abandoned and general legal protection insurance was offered for the private and professional sectors. In 1958 the company was renamed to its current name: DAS Deutscher Automobil Schutz Allgemeine Rechtsschutz-Versicherungs-Aktiengesellschaft .
In 1961 Victoria Lebensversicherungs-AG acquired a 74 percent majority stake. At this point in time, DAS was already Europe's largest legal protection insurer, thanks to a number of foreign subsidiaries. In 1984 Victoria took over the remaining 26 percent of the share capital with Munich Re (Victoria: 16 percent, Munich Re: 10 percent).
In 1978 DAS Versicherungs-AG was founded as the first subsidiary. This was the only product to offer cover insurance and became the market leader in traffic service insurance. From 1985 DAS Versicherungs-AG was expanded to become a composite insurer.
In 1989, DAS International AG was founded as a further subsidiary . From 1990 onwards, it bundled all of DAS's foreign activities
After the Ergo Group was founded in 1997/1998 through the merger of Victoria Holding and Hamburg-Mannheimer Holding, DAS was initially retained. In 2010 it also took over the business of Hamburg-Mannheimer Rechtsschutzversicherungs-AG, while the DAS subsidiaries were already transferred to Ergo Versicherung AG as part of a new brand strategy. In 2015, DAS was also completely integrated into Ergo Versicherung AG. The DAS brand was initially retained. It was then transferred to the ERGO brand on the German market in September 2019.
Products
Until the brand migration to Ergo, cross-divisional products from the legal protection area were sold under the DAS brand. This applies to both the commercial area and the private customer area. In the last test of the Stiftung Warentest ( financial test issue 12/2014) it was u. a. DAS emerged as the test winner in a comparison of 55 legal protection tariffs with the DAS Premium tariff. Legal protection products have been available on the German market under the Ergo brand since September 2019.
