Ergo Versicherung AG was founded on September 26, 1853 as Allgemeine Eisenbahn-Versicherungs-Gesellschaft (AEVG).

During the Second World War , the headquarters on Lindenstrasse in Berlin-Kreuzberg was destroyed, and the company, now trading as Victoria , lost all of its business abroad and in what would later become the GDR . After the company had recovered from the aftermath of the war, the headquarters were relocated to Düsseldorf, where it is still located today.

In the second half of 2010, the Victoria brand name was given up in favor of the Ergo name as part of a group restructuring and a new branding strategy . The subsidiaries of the Victoria insurance companies and their customer bases were reassigned within the group; the Victoria Versicherung AG was subsequently with the property insurers of Hamburg-Mannheimer and DAS for Ergo Versicherungsgruppe AG merged.
