  • DARS was founded on December 7, 1993 as the successor to Republiška skupnost za ceste Slovenije as the director and operator of the Slovenian motorways and expressways. It belonged entirely to the Republic of Slovenia and started its activity on January 1, 1994.

In 1995 the ABC toll system was introduced. It was first implemented on a test basis at the toll station in Torovo and was intended for private vehicles. With the introduction of the vignette in 2008, ABC on-board devices were used by truck drivers. In 1996, the closed toll system on the Styrian motorway junction was converted into an open toll system.

In 2003, DARS was converted into a joint stock company and merged with the then state-owned PVAC (Podjetje za vzdrževanje avtocest, doo). DARS became the management and maintenance company for all built highways, infrastructure and equipment, along with the acquisition of the toll.

The Črni Kal Viaduct was opened to traffic in 2004 and is the most complex bridging structure on Slovenian motorways to date.

In 2005 Šentilj in the north-east and Koper in the south-west were connected by a motorway. The first section between Vransko and Trojane was opened to traffic in 2002, the section between Trojane and Blagovica in 2005. The section has the longest double tunnel in Slovenia at the time - the 2931 meter long Trojane tunnel.

The traffic information center for public roads (“Prometno-informacijski center za državne ceste” or “PIC” for short) started operations in 2006. It provides information about the road conditions and combines safety and comfort with the uninterrupted flow of traffic. The PIC receives new, technically improved tools every year.

The vignette system for vehicles weighing up to 3.5 tons was implemented in 2008. It replaced the old system of toll charges at toll stations. A four-lane motorway between Maribor and Pince (near the Hungarian border) has been opened to traffic. With the release of the last, 26 km long section between Lenart and Vučja vas, the eastern part of Slovenia was connected. The section between Vučja vas and Beltinci, which was opened to traffic in 2003, has the longest bridge on Slovenian roads. With a length of 833 meters and a weight of 16,000 tons, the bridge over the Mur is the longest and heaviest push bridge in Slovenia. Their area is 23,257 square meters.

The Markovec double tunnel became the latest addition to the Slovenian motorway network in 2015. With a total length of 2.1 kilometers, it is the fourth longest Slovenian tunnel. The total amount of dredged soil was 370,000 cubic meters, which corresponds to a 60-kilometer train with 4,800 4-axle wagons.

On September 6, 2016, DARS and the consortium of Telekom Slovenije dd and Q-Free ASA, Norway, signed a contract for the establishment and operation of a multi-lane electronic toll system in the free flow of traffic on motorways and expressways, for vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of more than 3.5 tons. The system is based on microwave technology with the standardized frequency of 5.8 GHz. 125 toll gates are installed on motorways and expressways between junctions along the entire motorway network. After the introduction of the new toll system on April 1, 2018, toll stations will be gradually removed from Slovenia's motorways.

At the end of November 2018, the A4 motorway, which leads from Maribor to the border with Croatia, was completed with a total length of 33.7 kilometers.
