The series 703 of Deutsche Bahn AG is used to maintain the overhead contact line systems .

The DB Netz AG needed to replace the old cars of series 701 and 702 . She therefore commissioned the Windhoff company to build a suitable vehicle.

Windhoff manufactured a two-axle vehicle, which was designed for testing and maintenance work on the overhead lines and was called IFO ( maintenance vehicle for overhead line systems ). 1996 saw the first delivery of nine multiple units (class 703.0). In 2000 and 2001, Gleisbaumechanik Brandenburg was commissioned by DB Netz AG to manufacture another ten such vehicles (class 703.1).

The vehicle frame is made of a self-supporting construction with welded metal sheets.

Since August 2020, a model of the 703 series that has been completely renovated by the manufacturer has been owned by the Albtalverkehrsgesellschaft Karlsruhe (AVG).

Drives

The 703 series has a water-cooled MAN - Diesel engine type D 2865 LOH 10 with six cylinders . Its torque is transmitted to both axles via a hydrodynamic powershift transmission from Zahnradfabrik-Friedrichshafen . This drive is used when driving on a route.

In order to be able to operate the hydraulic drives, a second MAN diesel engine of type D 0824 was installed. This motor provides the hydraulics with an output of 81 kW.

A hydrodynamic drive propels the vehicle during crawl speed. At speeds of up to 10 km / h, work on the overhead line is possible while driving.
