The DIN standard DIN 19239 measurement, control, regulation - control technology - memory-programmed controls - programming was created by the German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies and regulates the programming of programmable logic controllers .

A first draft was published on April 1, 1981, which was replaced by a revised and released version on May 1, 1983. DIN 19239 was withdrawn on August 1, 1994 and replaced by DIN EN 61131-3 .

DIN 19239 defines instruction lists (STL), ladder diagrams (KOP) and function plan (FUP) as language elements for controls .
The languages defined in this standard were already widely used in the 1980s. Examples are Logistat A500 ( AEG ) and Step 5 ( Siemens ).
