STEP 5 programming

STEP 5 is programming software for the programmable logic controllers Simatic S5 from Siemens . Siemens discontinued this software on October 1, 2005 because the Simatic S5 is no longer being developed. The successor control is the Simatic S7 with the programming software STEP 7 .

With STEP 5, user programs can be created for all Simatic S5 automation devices. Functionality:

STEP 5 is available in two versions:

  • STEP 5 / ST basic package for PGs and PCs for programming, testing, documenting, commissioning and for automatic documentation of S5 programs for the automation devices S5-90U, S5-95 / U / F, S5-100U, S5-101U, S5 -115U / H / F, S5-135U, S5-150U and S5-155U / H.
  • STEP / ST for small controls for PC; STEP 5 / ST for small controllers is specially tailored to the programming of the S5-90U, S5-95U / F and S5-100U small controllers. Only the following software packages can run: GRAPH Mini, COM IP 266, COM 95F, COM DG1, COM 521 BASIC. All other COM packages and option packages cannot be used.

Components of the programming software

Due to the limited hardware resources of programming devices (PG) and PCs at the time, the STEP 5 software is divided into individual packages. These are loaded into the main memory by the S5 command interpreter (S5-KOMI) if they are required.

Components of the basic package

LAD, FBD, STL
The user program is written with this package. You can switch between the different programming languages of the program during processing. The full range of functions can only be used in STL , as certain functions can not be represented in LAD and FBD .
QL, COMPARISON, UMV
  • QL - Used to create a cross-reference list; this shows where an operand is used.
  • COMPARISON - Compare programs and blocks.
  • UMV function for rewiring the operands. This function saves and changes the addresses of operands.
EPROM / EEPROM
The EPROM or EEPROM memory modules used in S5 controllers can be written, read and compared with this package .
PG COUPLING
Used for data exchange between different programming devices.
SYMBOLIC EDITOR
This package is used to create the assignment list; Addresses are assigned to symbolic operands in it.

Additional packages

Graph 5
With the Graph 5 package, sequence controls can be implemented that are written in sequence diagrams .
PG-NET
With this package, the STEP 5 software becomes network-compatible. User programs can be stored centrally on a server.
KOMDOK
Used to create program documentation.

Origin of the term

STEP is a shortcut here and stands for ST euerungen E asy P rogrammieren.
