The DIN standard DIN 4020 Geotechnical investigations for structural purposes is a standard that deals with the stipulations applicable to geological investigations in the building industry in Germany. A supplement 1 is part of the standard: Geotechnical investigations for structural purposes - application aids, explanations . It supplements EN 1997-2 Eurocode 7: Draft, calculation and dimensioning in geotechnical engineering - Part 2: Exploration and investigation of the subsoil , which is valid for Europe .

Geotechnical investigations according to this standard are a prerequisite for the proof of safety in earthworks and foundation work according to DIN 1054 .

In DIN 4020, a distinction is made between three geotechnical categories (GK):

  • Category 1 includes simple structures on level, stable ground that neither affect the environment nor the groundwater
  • Category 2 includes construction projects that do not belong to either Category 1 or Category 3
  • Category 3 includes construction projects with difficult structures and difficult subsoil conditions that require advanced geotechnical knowledge

A binding new regulation of the geotechnical categories has been made in DIN EN 1997-1.
