The DIN standard DIN 66003 (DIN - German Institute for Standardization ) is a character set standard that was used for character encoding in computer systems . The DIN 66003 standard bears the title "Information processing: 7-bit code" and was first published in July 1968 and changed in June 1974 and February 1999.

DIN 66003 was based on the ASCII character set that was common around the world at the time , but replaced characters (@, [, \,], {, |,}, ~) with umlauts , the Eszett and paragraph characters, which were unusual in the German written language . A total of eight characters thus deviate from the ASCII standard:

The ASCII standard developed in 1963 only contained a very reduced set of characters that was insufficient for most languages, including German . National versions of the ASCII standard have therefore been developed in many countries to remedy this situation. Many of these standards have been summarized in ISO 646 .

DIN 66003 is the German variant of the ISO standard ISO 646. Like ASCII, DIN 66003, which is based on seven-bit coding, could only contain 128 characters (95 of which were printable). DIN 66003 / ISO 646 were later replaced by the eight-bit ISO 8859 family of character sets from 1986, which could contain up to 256 characters (191 of which were printable).
