The DKW Hummel is a moped that DKW and Auto Union GmbH in Ingolstadt brought onto the market in 1956. 117,617 units were built by 1958. After the Jawa 550, which was built in 1955, it was one of the first mopeds with a three-speed transmission. The DKW Hummel Super was advertised in 1958 with the slogan Moped for two - joy for two . Accordingly, it was described as the first German pillion moped in the same year .

In the 1960s, the production of the model was continued by the Zweirad-Union , still under the old name Hummel , but now as model 113 instead of 101. The more powerful Zweirad-Union- Hummel was optionally available as a two-seater.

frame

The Hummel has a pressed steel frame with an integrated 5.5 liter tank. The front wheel is guided on a short swing fork with rubber band suspension, the rear wheel on a long swing arm with spring struts in which, in addition to the steel spring, there is a rubber damper rod. The “standard” and “luxury” versions only differ externally in terms of chrome trim and a mudguard that covers the lower part of the front wheel up to the swing arm.

engine and gears

Engine with carburetor cover and cold start lever (original Hummel from 1957)

The engine is an air-cooled DKW single-cylinder two-stroke engine with reverse scavenging , for which a mountaineering ability of 20% was specified with an output of 1.35 hp. To start, the Hummel has a pedal crank according to the regulations, which also allows driving with muscle power and was called "pedal crank kick starter" in the advertising brochure. In the operating instructions, express reference was made to the use of cycle paths if the crank should be used for cycling. At 67 Phon, the driving noise is low compared to the DKW motorcycles (76 Phon for the DKW RT 125 model ). As with most mopeds, the gearbox is shifted with a twist grip on the left of the handlebar. A fully encapsulated chain transfers the power to the rear wheel.
