DNS Belgium (until 2012 called DNS.be ) is a non-profit organization based in Heverlee , Belgium , which is responsible for the administration of the country-specific top-level domain .be . It was founded in 1999 and was also a founding member of EURid , which was awarded .eu .

history

DNS Belgium goes back to the introduction of the top-level domain .be in 1988. It was initially administered by Pierre Verbaete at the Catholic University of Leuven , who wanted to give up his role at the end of the 1990s due to the increasing interest in .be domains .

For this purpose, DNS.be was founded in 1999 , to which the administration of the address was officially handed over a year later. As a result, the award criteria were largely liberalized: Since December 2000, registration has been completely automated, and .be domains could now also be registered via third providers - officially accredited registrars . While around 40,000 .be domains were registered in mid-2000, the number rose to 89,718 addresses by the end of December.

In September 2002 DNS.be founded the EURid consortium together with the registries for the country-specific top-level domains of Sweden and Italy . The operative business was divided between the three organizations, in May 2003 EURid was finally able to prevail against other applicants for .eu.

In 2012 DNS.be applied to ICANN for the introduction of the new top-level domains .vlaanderen and .brussels , which are officially supported by the respective state government. As part of the process, the organization announced that it would change its name from DNS.be to DNS Belgium , which should reflect the expanded portfolio.

safety

DNS Belgium has been supporting the Domain Name System Security Extensions ( DNSSEC ) since September 2010, which can be used to ensure the authenticity of domain data. This made .be one of the first country-specific top-level domains to implement the extension. In January 2013, the organization's name servers were also subjected to a DDoS attack , which they survived without any problems. Since then, the operation of the ccTLD has been considered relatively secure.

Like other Network Information Centers , DNS Belgium is also officially accredited by RIPE .
